Online creators often have very little control over the types of robots that can access their content, but Cloudflare can have a solution.
The company has revived the HTTP 402 intervention code as a neat way to block or invoice AI robots to access your site in a new feature that it calls “Pay Per Crawl”.
The best part is that it is not a block or the load of all controls – users can allow specific robots to access their site for free, invoice other people to access and block those you do not want to browse your content.
Load of AI robots for access
The HTTP 402 response code, otherwise known as the required state code 402, indicates that payment of crawlers is necessary to access the content. Consequently, the robot can respond with the intention to pay, either it is prevented from accessing the content.
As a bonus, content creators with a block on their site can actually “say” to AI robots that they are open to potential payments in the future.
For those who think that someone could simply browse a type robot that has access to the site, Cloudflare is one step ahead. An authentic robot will use the “signature-agent”, “signature-entry” and “signature” headers to authenticate with Cloudflare.
Cloudflare will then compare a public key from a pair of ED25519 keys which is stored in a repertoire hosted with the URL of the key directory and user agent information recorded from Cloudflare, allowing the authentic robot via and blocking all the busy tracks.
The crawlers will also be able to crawl on the web with a defined budget to access protected sites using the head “crawler-exact-care” to accept the proposed price listed by the head “ Crawler-Price ” on the desired site, or pre-emptively use the use of the crawler-max-prix during a site that will grant access if the price is equal or less than the budget of the Eampler.
Cloudflare also has some theories for the salary potential per ramp in the future. An AI agent can receive a budget to crawl the web when you respond to an prompt, allowing the user to access high quality and relevant content when entering an prompt.
Pay Per Crawl is currently only available in private beta version, but interested parties can reach Cloudflare via the link at the bottom of the blog.
