Peshawar:
The Muslim League of Pakistan-Nawaz (PML-N) filed a brief request before the High Court of Peshawar (PHC) contesting the allocation of the reserved seats in the assembly of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. The party asked the court to retain the newly selected members on the reserved seats to take the oath until a final decision was made.
The Pakistan Electoral Commission (ECP) has been appointed respondent in the petition. Following the National Awami Party (ANP) and Pakistan Tehreek-E-insa Sliamentians (PTIP), PML-N also turned to the court for what it calls the unfair distribution of reserved seats.
Placed via Barrister Saqib Raza, the PML-N petition argues that the party has seven seats in the KP assembly.
However, the ECP would have allocated ten seats reserved for Jamiat Ulema-E-Islam (F) on the basis of seven general seats, while PML-N received only eight seats reserved for the same number of seats.
The party says that he initially won six general seats in the province, an independent member joining his ranks within three days of the elections, which made his total. Despite this, the ECP has only allocated reserved seats proportional to six general seats, which claims that the petitioner is unfair.
The petition urges the court to cancel the notification of the ECP concerning the distribution of reserved seats and order the commission to revise the allowances.
