Kyiv: President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States would send additional weapons to Ukraine after Russia has claimed new gains in its crushing war against its neighbor.
Trump’s announcement followed Washington by saying last week that it arrested weapons expeditions to kyiv, leaving Ukrainian officials caught up in deprivation and rushing for more clarity.
A break poses a potentially serious challenge for kyiv, which faces some of the greatest missile and drone attacks in Russia in the war of more than three years.
“We are going to have to send more weapons – mainly defensive weapons,” Trump told journalists to the White House.
“They are touched very, very hard,” he said about Ukraine, while adding that he was “not satisfied” by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Putin launched the large -scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and showed little desire to end the conflict despite Trump’s pressure.
The American president’s commitment to send more weapons to Ukraine came after Moscow said on MOSIS that his forces had captured his first village in the Dnipropetrovsk central region of Ukraine after progressing for months.
Russia has launched a new drone and missile dam on a large scale before the announcement, especially in the military recruitment centers in Ukraine.
Kyiv also said that he had conducted a drone attack on a Russian ammunition factory in the Moscow region.
“Difficult” situation
Russia said its forces had captured the village of Dachne in the Dnipropetrovsk region, an important industrial mining territory that has been subject to Russian air attacks.
Last month, Moscow said that his forces crossed the border in the Dnipropetrovsk region for the first time in his campaign.
The Russian forces seem to have made the crossing of the regional border a key strategic objective in recent months, and deeper progress could pose logistical and economic problems for Ukraine.
Kyiv has so far denied any Russian foot in Dnipropetrovsk.
The army of Ukraine said earlier on Monday than its forces “repelled” attacks on Dnipropetrovsk, including “near” Dachne.
Dnipropetrovsk is not one of the five Ukrainian regions – Donetsk, Kherson, Lugansk, Zaporizhzhia and Crimea – which Moscow has publicly claimed as Russian territory.
Describing the situation in Dnipropetrovsk as “difficult” for kyiv’s forces, Ukrainian military expert Oleksiy Kopytko said Russia hopes to create a kind of buffer zone in the region.
“Our troops hold their land fairly regularly,” he said AFP.
Count on partners
The White House said last week that it interrupted certain key weapons expeditions to Ukraine which had been promised under the predecessor of Trump, Joe Biden, without providing details on affected weapons programs.
He said the decision was made after examining American defense needs and his military aid to foreign countries.
Kyiv had long feared stops for American aid after Trump returned to the White House in January, after criticizing the tens of billions of dollars in support and arms sent by Biden.
Under the Biden administration, Washington is committed to providing more than $ 65 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
Trump has not announced any new military aid package for kyiv since his entry into office for the second time.
Rather, the Republican President pushed the two parties to peace talks, including in telephone calls with Putin. The Russian chief rejected the pleadings for a cease-fire and demanded that Ukraine gave more territory if it wants the end of the war.
Before Trump’s remarks on Monday, Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky said that air defense had remained “absolute priority for the protection of lives”, and that his country was counting on partners to “fully deliver what we agreed”.
Explosions were heard from night to Tuesday in the Ukrainian city in the south of Mykolav, the mayor Oleksandr Senkevych wrote on Telegram, adding that the “threat of drones” was underway.
Mykolav regional governor Vitaliy Kim said that a fire broke out in the outskirts of the city due to bombing and that a 51 -year -old man was injured.
