The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a high alert while heavy monsoon rains continue to beat large parts of the country, warning new intense showers until July 10 which can trigger sudden floods, urban floods and landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to PMD forecasts, the northeast and northeast regions, notably Mirurius, Galliyat, Swat, Kohistan, Chitral, Abbottabad and Manshera, face an increased risk of sudden flood due to the increase in water levels in local watercourses.
In southern Balutchistan, districts such as Barkhan, Kohlu, Dera Bugti, Kalat and Turbat could undergo runoff and dangerous floods due to persistent precipitation.
Urban centers, notably Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Nowshera and Peshawar, are on alert for urban floods, in particular in low areas.
Commuters and residents are invited to limit non -essential trips and ensure the availability of emergency supplies.
The PMD has also raised concerns about landslides and mud shifts in the hilly and mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and cashmere, which can cause road closings and travel disturbances.
Local authorities in the affected regions were asked to remain on alert and activate rapid response and evacuation plans if necessary.
The current meteorological system is part of the current monsoon season, which has already led to significant precipitation in the last 24 hours.
Sheikhupura and Balakot recorded 48 mm and 40 mm of rain respectively, while several districts of Punjab, KP and Kashmir received moderate showers in Lourdes.
With more precipitation expected over the next 48 hours, PMD has reiterated that the conditions remain essential and urged the public to remain vigilant, follow the official advice and take preventive measures to ensure security.
