- Windows 11 could be a “dynamic” wallpaper controlled by AI
- It is according to a leak that found clues in the preview versions of the operating system
- Microsoft has tried this idea in the past, the mind, before abandoning it – but this time, we hope that things will be different
Microsoft plans to introduce a kind of wallpaper powered by Windows 11 (not for the first time, I could add).
The well-known provider of gossip linked to Microsoft, Phantomofearth, recently published on X to inform us of the work which is apparently underway to produce “dynamic” backgrounds for Windows 11.
Microsoft works on AI Desktop background stuff, once again, this time: “dynamic background” “your background will automatically update your selections”June 23, 2025
What types of dynamic horizons are planned, exactly? Well, it is not clear, and we have no details as to the precise nature of this functionality, except that the wallpaper “will automatically update according to your selections”.
This information was determined from the recent preview versions of Windows 11, and Windows highlighted the post above on X, observing that he tried to discover tips for the options mentioned, but could not. So, it seems that it is still very early for potential capacity.
Analysis: give life to wallpapers
We must be particularly suspicious here because Microsoft has worked on dynamic wallpapers (also known as “live”) in the past, then canceled the idea. Indeed, the concept of horizons fueled by AI for Windows 11 has been floating for a long time.
You may even remember that components for living wallpapers were present in Windows 11 23:2:2h, hidden under the hood, for a while, before they were stripped in 24 hours2, because Microsoft obviously thought of the idea. What I felt was rather a shame, because some of these concepts seemed very intelligent (you can see one in the image above).
What we have here is a much more nebulous rumor, hence the need more than usual prudence. That said, Microsoft was busy trying to block more and more AI in Windows 11, and for me, it seems to be an area obvious to honor with AI, which brings additional fantasy to your history (if you wish).
I mean not only sophisticated dynamic wallpapers in terms of animated elements, or parallax effects – which may well be part of the plan – but also have an AI make clever tips such as the change in the appearance of a wallpaper depending on the time of day, for example. (Like forest wallpaper in MacOS Sequoia, where lighting changes throughout the day).
We are told that the background will update according to the “selections” you make, so there could be various options to activate (or deactivate), or perhaps various background themes, including select. With the AI in the mixture, I suppose that if it is the path that Microsoft intends to travel with wallpapers, we can finally get backgrounds suggested according to your habits in Windows (if you allow AI access to this data, of course).
All this remains to be seen, however, and even if this rumor is correct for the moment, Microsoft can still think of the idea, as it is done in the past. The obvious disadvantage with more elaborate ideas for wallpapers is the increase in drain on system resources compared to static backgrounds, which will be a particular area of concern for lesser PCs. On these machines, however, you simply cannot use dynamic wallpapers.
