The NDMA issues a national alert for heavy rains

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has published a national alert, warning heavy rains, thunderstorms and an increased risk of glacial lakes (glofs) over the next 12 hours.

At least 90 people have lost their lives and 158 other people were injured in rain -related incidents across Pakistan since June 26, according to the latest figures published Thursday by the NDMA.

The authority urged local administrations and residents to remain alert, especially in areas near rivers and glaciers. According to the NDMA, an increase in temperatures combined with the precipitation planned has increased the risk of the glof in northern Pakistan.

Residents near the banks of Hunza, Shigar, Ghanche and Chitral were invited to show additional caution. Provincial disaster management organizations and relevant district have also been invited to closely monitor high -risk areas.

The weather forecast predicts strong precipitation accompanied by strong winds in Islamabad and several Punjab districts, including Mianwali, Khushab, Faithbad, Okara, Sahiwal, Multan and Bahawalnagar. The NDMA warns of possible urban floods, especially in low areas.

In Balutchistan, districts such as Zhob, Killa Saifullah, Loralai, Barkhan, Ziarat, Dera Bugti, Sibi, Shaman, Quetta, Mastung, Kalat, Surab, Khuzdar, Awaran and Panjgur are also supposed to undergo strong precipitation, as well as gluces.

The authority warns against any urban floods, landslides, power outages and traffic disturbances due to unfavorable weather conditions.

The NDMA strongly advised the public to stay away from low structures, electricity posts and display panels during storms. In addition, sudden overvoltages of water flow in local rivers are a potential concern.

Emergency intervention units were invited to guarantee the appropriate deployment of machines and equipment in vulnerable areas. Tourists are specifically warned to avoid trekking or tourism near glacial regions due to the increased risk of the GLOF.

The NDMA has also ordered the relevant services to prioritize the authorization of roads in the event of blockages and take preventive measures to manage any urgency. Citizens are invited to remain informed via the Alert Disaster Pak NDMA mobile application for real -time weather updates and security guidelines.

Punjab, the most populous province in Pakistan, reported the greatest number of deaths, with 32 deaths, including 18 children.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa recorded 30 deaths, including 14 children. The Sindh represented 16 deaths, including eight children, while Balutchistan reported 11 deaths, including five children. Azad Jammu and cashmere recorded a death.

The NDMA report stressed that out of the 90 people who died, 45 were children, 29 were men and 16 were women. The number of injuries was 158, with 63 children, 56 men and 39 women among the injured.

In addition to the loss of linked lives, strong precipitation caused significant damage to property, affecting at least 343 houses on a national scale. Among these, 109 houses were completely destroyed, while 234 underwent partial damage.

Authorities urge residents to be cautious as the monsoon season continues, while rescue efforts are underway in the affected areas.
