Kuala Lumpur: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday on the sidelines of a meeting of foreign ministers in Malaysia, the State Department said.

The meeting comes as Washington and Beijing remain locked in disputes on questions ranging from trade and fentanyl to Taiwan and advanced technologies.

Rubio and Wang are in Kuala Lumpur for a rally of foreign ministers of the Southeast Asian Nations Association, to which Japan, South Korea and Australia are also attending.

The tensions between Washington and Beijing have soaked since the American president Donald Trump took office in January, the two countries engaged in a pricing war which sent duties to the exports of the other.

At one point, the United States struck China with additional 145% samples from its goods, while the two parties are committed to the climbing of the Tat-For-Tat. Chinese countermeasures on American products reached 125%.

Beijing and Washington agreed in Geneva in May to temporarily reduce their incredibly high prices – a result that Trump described as a “total reset”.
