- The foldable iPhone can have a thickness of 4.8 mm when it is unfolded
- This would make it thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Z fold 4.2 mm thick 7
- However, being thicker can be accompanied by certain advantages
One of the most impressive things about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is how thin, just 4.2 mm thick when it is unfolded. It is so thin in fact that the very ripable foldable iPhone might not be able to match it, despite this device probably does not start before 2026 at the earliest – at that time, Samsung could have an even thinner foldable.
According to Leaker Setsuna Digital (via Apple Insider), the foldable iPhone will have a thickness of 4.8 mm when it is unfolded, which, although certainly quite thin, is 0.6 mm thick that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7.
However, this would have beaten the 13 -inch iPad Pro (2024), because it is 5.1 mm thick. He would also beat the 7.8 mm iPhone 16, so it could always be one of Apple’s thinnest devices – at least when unfolded.
Once folded, we assume that it will be at least twice thicker as when unfolded, but it is unlikely that it is exactly twice thicker, because the folded dimensions of the phones are generally more than double the unfolding, with the Galaxy Z fold 7, for example, being 8.9 mm thick.
However, this rumor may well be inaccurate – the source has a mixed assessment, and we have heard other thicknesses advanced before, with an earlier leak pointing towards a thickness of 4.6 mm.
Slim is not always better
Anyway, it seems that the next Apple phone will probably be thicker than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, but it is not necessarily a bad thing. Yes, this means that when folded, this device can be a bit large, but it could also allow a place for a larger battery or better cameras than the phone would have otherwise.
We believe that it is a compromise that many people would probably take, so for the moment we are not too concerned about the fact that Apple does not win this particular battle.
But with the foldable iPhone probably not coming before the end of 2026, we take all the rumors on this subject with a pinch of salt at the moment.
