A Buffy The Vampire Slayer The Souel Spinoff series is officially developing. After years to play with the possibility of restarting one of the best television series of all time, the series is finally on the way with a pilot commanded by Hulu – one of the best streaming services.
News of a Buffy The Vampire Slayer The restart series came for the first time in February when it was announced that the series would return after 20 years. At the time of the announcement, the winner of the Oscar Chloé Zhao (Nomadic) was appointed director of the show, and Nora and Lilla Zuckerman (Impassive face) have been announced as writers.
The next big question was whether the Slayer herself Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the role of Buffy Summers, would return. And in short, yes, Gellar will return to Sunnydale, joining the team as an executive producer – but what about the original production team of the show?
The original show of the 90s was written and directed by Joss Whedon, who in 2021 was accused of having created a toxic working environment on the set of the show as well as his series of spin-offs Angel. Consequently, it is confirmed that Whedon will not come back to work on the next chapter of the Buffyverse. With that, original Buffy The Vampire Slayer Producers Gail Berman, Fran Kuzui, Kaz Kuzui and Dolly Parton (yes, THE Dolly Parton) will come back all.
It is still early in the production of spin-off, but we had our ears on the ground with regard to all the recent updates concerning the show. Here is everything we know about the next chapter of Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
Complete spoilers follow Buffy The Vampire Slayer Seasons 1-7.
Speculation release dates
Although the pilot is currently at the start of production and that a new lead killer has been thrown, an exact release date has not yet been determined. According to IMDB, he is billed to be released next year, but again, an official announcement has not yet been made – so we are not excluding 2027.
Planned cast
In addition to climbing the executive producer, Sarah Michelle Gellar will also resume her role as Buffy Summers. However, this time, Buffy will not be at the center of the restart. Instead, Buffy will be a recurring character and a brand new Slayer will be the goal – and she has been found.
In May, it was revealed that the young actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong would assume the main role in the series in a row. Gellar told Armstrong The News herself sharing the announcement via an Instagram coil where she said “Welcome to the new Sunnydale”-a possible head nod for the show maybe?
Before marking the role of next killer of this generation, Armstrong launched his career in the productions of some of the best streaming services, including the Disney + series Star Wars: Skeletal crewand Netflix Anne with an E.
Until now, Armstrong and Gellar are the only names attached to the confirmed distribution of the spin-off. But while we expect even more names to surface, Gellar has expressed his desire to bring the characters from the past sharing of Buffy with Vanity Fair Italia “My dream is to bring all those who are dead, but the space will also have to be made for new stories”.
If the gellar’s dream materializes, there are a multitude of endless characters from the past of Buffy that could be resurrected, but the Fandom will certainly have its favorites – Joyce Summers being one of the main ones, who died in season five.
Other names that could arise go from Jenny Calendar, who suffered overwhelming death in Angel’s hands in season two, Tara who was slaughtered in front of her lover Willow in season six, and even Anya died during the last moments of the final episode. But as exciting as it may seem, it has not been confirmed.
Conspiracy rumors

Similar to its release date, we do not know exactly in which direction the show will take in terms of conspiracy, but the restart was described as “the next chapter of Buffyversse”, explains Deadline. In addition, Sarah Michelle Gellar has also revealed to Vanity Fair that the restart “will be lighter than the last seasons of the original”, adding “we will try to find a balance between the new and the old characters”.
However, that does not reveal much about the direction that the restart is concerning the plot. By saying this, TV Line shared details on a possible conspiracy plan, which we take with a pinch of salt for the moment.
According to the point of sale, the new slayer will be based more on the characteristics of Willow, the shy but intellectual companion of Buffy with a talent for witchcraft rather than on the fight, the character of Kick-Ass Buffy-Esque. TV Line also said that the new Slayer could be named Nova, although it admits that it could be a reserved space name until more details are revealed.
Another speculation concerns the group of friends of the new Slayer, which, according to TV Line, could reproduce a similar to the “gang scooby” of the original series made up of Buffy, Xander, Willow, Buffy’s Watcher Giles and other recurring characters depending on the season. TV Line indicates that the new “scoopies” will be “Hugo, an outdoor nerd that comes from money, and Gracie, a young vampires expert who is a gellar Buffy acolyte”.
Alternatively, there is another direction that the plot could take. Despite the golden rule of not having a single killer at a time, the restart of Hulu could return this to his head and explore the possibilities of several killers – just like his final of the seven season. But it is simply a personal hypothesis.
