Karachi: residents of the metropolis woke up on Sunday at a rather pleasant morning after the city received light showers in the short hours of several days of covered weather.

Light rains have been reported in various regions of the city, including near the airport, Malir, Gulistan-E-Jauhar, Shah Faisal, North Karachi, New Karachi, Surjani Town, Gulshan-E-Maymar, Gulshan-E-Iqbal, II Chundrigar Road, Pidc, Saddar and Burns Road.

The highest precipitation was recorded at 2.3 millimeters on the university road, 2 mm at the airport, PAF Base Faisal and Gulshan-E-Hadeed. In the Korangi and Jinnah terminal, the showers were recorded at 1.4 mm, while in the city of Keamari and Surjani, it was only 0.2 mm.

The downside comes while the Pakistan meteorological department (PMD) has provided moderate to heavy rains with thunderstorms in Karachi with a temperature which should oscillate between 32 and 34 degrees Celsius.

In addition, another monsoon system can affect the Sindh at the end of July, added the Met Office.

It should be noted that the day earlier, the Sindh government canceled the local government’s vacation and activated emergency intervention measures before the monsoon rains in Karachi.

The Higher Minister of Sindh, Sharjeel Inam Memon, said that the holidays in local governments had been canceled and that arrangements had been made to ensure immediate drainage of rainwater in vulnerable parts of the city.

The portfolio meteorological system was located above southwest of Uttar Pradesh, India, and heading for Rajasthan, according to the meteorologist. Analysts thought that the system could start having an impact on certain parts of the Sindh, including Karachi, by Friday evening or later in the evening.

If the system continues to move to the west, it can bring strong precipitation to various districts of the Sindh. However, for the moment, moderate rain is expected in Karachi, according to forecasts. Meteorologists closely follow the system trajectory and its potential effects on southern Pakistan in the coming days.

In addition to Karachi, the country as a whole attended monsoon rains with showers wreaking havoc in various fields, which led to at least 202 people – including 96 children – killed in various incidents, in accordance with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The official data depict a dark image, the Punjab representing 123 of total deaths. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded 40 deaths, Sindh 21, Balutchistan 16, and Islamabad and Azad Jammu and Cashmire reported one.

The causes of death varied considerably, with at least 118 killed due to the collapse of houses, 30 sudden floods and others due to drowning, lightning blows, electrocution and landslides.

The rains injured more than 560 people, including 182 children.
