Samsung has made a big jump with the sustainability of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, because the company announced that the display panel used by this phone will remain fully functional after being folded 500,000 times.
This represents only 200,000 times with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6, so this particular aspect of Z Fold 7 should be more than twice as durable than the previous model. In practice, 500,000 folds translate into more than 10 years of user for the average user (which Samsung describes as someone who folds the device about 100 times a day), and more than six years of users for heavy users, that is to say those who fold it more like 200 times a day.
Even the latter of these figures is longer than most people who hold their phone, which should make a reassuring upgrade.
Samsung explains that this improvement was made possible by a “newly developed structure by shocks, inspired by the principles of designing checkered glass”, and that it was put to the test by Veritas office (a global test, inspection and certification company).
Better than most, but not all
So, all of this seems very promising, and should mean that the Galaxy Z Fold 7 also beat rival devices on this front, as they tend to be assessed between 200,000 and 400,000 folds.
However, a rival that he did not beat is the OnePlus Open, which was remarkably certified by Tüv Rheinland to offer a “reliable fold” for 1,000,000 folds.
In this spirit, it is all the more disappointing since there will not be an Open 2 OnePlus this year. But if you are one of the many people who improve their phone at least every few years, then the Samsung device should always offer more sustainability than you need on this front.
