Brittney Griner described what life in a Russian detention center looked like in the past, but she revealed horrible details about what led one of her comrades to be in prison with her.
Griner appeared on the “Funky Friday” podcast by Cam Newton, where Atlanta’s dream star discussed his imprisoned time. During this conversation, Griner explained how prisoners were not separated according to the crimes they committed.
So, while she said that most of the detainees were in prison due to murder or drugs, one of her first cell comrades was there for a vile reason.

“I had a cell companion at the very beginning. I thought something was with her,” said Griner. “She acted like a child, but she was an adult woman, but she acted a lot as a teenage child. And then she had burned brands everywhere, and I discovered after the fact that she sold online videos from her husband and child – together. And it was with whom they did me in a cell.”
Griner added that the nature of the crimes of his cell companion led others to prison to “torture” it.

“There is not much torture of prisoners with girls on the side of women,” said Griner. “But if you there for something like that, yes, you are going to be tortured. And they would put their cigarettes on her and make her sleep too.”
Griner continued by saying how it was “crazy” that the prison was not separated by crime, because it did not want the others “to associate me with that one”.
“I didn’t really sleep at night because she is there while singing and doing strange things at night,” said Griner about the roommate.

Griner shared the details of his heartbreaking experience last year during a seat with “Good Morning America” by ABC News in 2024.
She had said that she believed that “life was over here” after realizing that she had left vape cartridges in her luggage in a Russian airport in February 2022. Griner played basketball abroad, which is common for WNBA players.
“I was so afraid,” she said in the emotional interview.
Griner was transferred to a Russian criminal colony at around 300 miles outside Moscow after being sentenced to nine years in prison. She served almost 10 months of this sentence before being released as part of an exchange of prisoners.
“The mattress had a huge blood stain on it. I had no soap, no toilet paper. It was the moment when I felt less than a human,” noted Griner about the prison.
Since returning home, Griner has acquired a new perspective on life in the United States, which was fully exposed to the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. Griner, who once boycotted the national anthem, has been seen emotional about the American team to win another golden medal in basketball.

“I didn’t think I would be here,” she said, via Reuters. “And then to be here and gain gold for my country, representing when my country fought for me so hard to be even standing here. This gold medal will occupy a special place among the other two that I had the chance to win.”
Griner, 34, features for The Dream Now, where she has an average of 10.3 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. She is a star of nine times, twice score champion and eight times the block leader during her career.
