IHC to resume the hearing of Peca on September 18

Islamabad:

The High Court of Islamabad (IHC) has provided a hearing on petitions contesting the Controversial Prevention Act of Electronic Crimes (PECA).

Judge Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas will resume the petitions on September 18.

Earlier, judge Minhas had held a hearing on July 7, during which the arguments had started, but the court did not set the next hearing date at that time – which was now announced.

The petitions were deposited by the PFUJ, the television anchors and the Islamabad High Court journalists association. At the previous hearing, Dr. Yasir Aman, PFUJ’s lawyer, presented arguments and should also continue them at the next hearing.

The National Assembly of January 23 of this year has changed the country’s cybercrime law – PECA, 2016 – granting the government widened powers to regulate and control social media platforms in the midst of the protest of journalists and rights.

Several groups and individuals subsequently filed petitions against the law modified in different highlights of the country, including the IHC.
