The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) launched an operation across the city to eliminate the collection of illegal parking costs, while initiating the cancellation of plots that were illegally rented in the Orangi Township project.
Following the announcement of free parking across the city by the mayor Murtaza Wahab and the subsequent directives of chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, KMC launched a repression against the collection of illegal parking costs. Since the launch of the initiative, three FIRs have been recorded as part of the illegal fee collection, including at the Kharadar police station on July 10, following complaints from citizens; at the Bahadurabad police station on July 28, after a raid by the city guards; And at the Boat Basin police station on July 29, when culprits were caught in the act.
Wahab urged citizens not to pay parking charges and to report these incidents at KMC Helpline 1339. He also ordered the Department of the City Director to deploy teams in free parking spaces designated and to perform regular patrols to ensure compliance.
In addition, KMC initiated the cancellation of more than 320 plots rented illegally in the Orangi Township project, after an internal investigation was ordered by the mayor.
The investigation revealed that during the mandate of the project director of the time, Rizwan Khan, a certain number of plots were rented without regular procedure. In 2019, 26 plots were allocated to a single individual, while 180 others were issued to members of the same family and relatives. The current project director Faisal Rizvi also submitted a report identifying more than 500 irregular powers in total, including 80 previously identified and 320 discoveries in the last phase.
The cancellation process began, with related cases transmitted to the anti-corruption director general for legal action.
