India’s SC to hear the IIOJK state plea

NEW DELHI:

The High Level Tribunal of India will be a plea for the restoration of the federal state of cashmere later this week, court officials announced on Tuesday, while the region marked six years under the direct rule of New Delhi.

The hearing, scheduled for August 8 at the Supreme Court, follows a request filed by two residents of the disputed territory, where a separatist insurrection has raged for years.

The Hindu nationalist government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August 2019 revoked the IIOJK limited autonomy and carried it directly under federal control.

This decision was accompanied by mass arrests and a communication failure that lasted months while India has strengthened its armed forces in the region to contain demonstrations.
