We told you about a million times how wonderful vinyl is, but you hear much less on CDs – and this is a good thing, because the relative lack of trend means that the cost of CDs of good condition is often a fraction of what you would pay for the same record on the vinyl. If, like me, you like to save money as much as you like to listen to music, then a CD player is always an intelligent addition to your system.
The Chinese company Shanling manufactures impressive CD players, including those with integrated amplification. And it has just brought out a new reader called CD80 II (via Darko Audio), with high power helmet amplification for wired and wired IEMs – and with high quality Bluetooth streaming so that you can play music from your phone, computer or tablet.
Shanling CD80 II: Key characteristics and price
The Shanling CD80 II takes the CD80 Compact and provides a new DAC system and a well improved CD charger. The 4th generation CD charger comes from the most advanced CD-S100 model, with an HD450 laser and a familiar tray style mechanism.
Inside the DAC ESS of the previous model was replaced by a CIRRUS Logic CS43198, and it is associated with Dual SGM8262 Helmet Amps to generate balanced outputs of 3.5 mm and 4.4 mm. They deliver 215 MW and 850 MW in 32 ohms respectively, with an output impedance adapted to the monitor less than 1 ohm.
The Bluetooth entry is Bluetooth 5.0 with the support of LDAC as well as the AAC and familiar SBC, and there is also a USB input with the support of 2 TB players to read files, to high resolution audio quality up to PCM 384KHz and DSD256.
There is a lot of things here, but Shanling has managed to wrap it in a very small 28 x 20 x 5cm case, so it’s quite small for even the tightest configurations.
The new Shanling CD80 II has a recommended price in the United States of $ 359; Other prices have not been announced, but in the United Kingdom, the first generation model had a typical £ 339 price.
