- YouTube has officially deployed age verification checks to American users
- The service will use AI to determine your age
- If he detects that you are under the age of 18, you will have to check your age by subjecting a credit card or a government identifier
YouTube has officially launched its AI-based age-based aging in the United States, after the introduction of online verification checks in the United Kingdom, which aim to protect young people from the vision of adult content. Since its widespread deployment has entered into force, it has encountered a multitude of reactions and users are furious.
The main reason why users are concerned about the process of verifying the new age of YouTube are due to the age estimate model itself, which the company announced “will use AI to interpret a variety of signals which help us to determine whether a user is above or under 18”. But how will it work?
The Youtube AI model will use “ signals ” to detect whether a user is under or greater than the age of 18, which includes the longevity of the account, the types of videos that a search user and the videos categories they have already watched.
If youtube detects that you are a minor, it will restore your account by deactivating personalized advertising, activating digital well-being tools and limiting the repetitive views of certain types of content, despite the age you have set for your account. If you are wrongly at under 18, you will have to check your age by subjecting a credit card or a government identifier.
YouTube did not explain how this AI model will receive data from those who try to verify their age or how the data will be stored, which has aroused fears of possible data leaks.
Generalized frustration
Although it is early in the new Iat de Youtube age controls, users are already taking measures to stop them. Tuesday, a change.org petition was published and increased exponentially, reaching more than 90,000 signatures so far.
The petition is read as follows “it is not only a restriction of age – it is mass monitoring and data control”, but this is not the only reason why users are angry. A Reddit article sparked a widespread conversation on the checks of the new age of YouTube, obtaining responses of 1.8k.
Oh my God, it happens by R / Youtube
Aside from data control problems, the question of whether YouTube is a host for the “real” content for adults is another conversation that furious users have (see below). This has also been raised when Spotify introduced its age digitization age checks in the United Kingdom, another service – despite non -closing x – accommodation of podcasts which can be considered as a mature nature.
Although YouTube is very much on this with the content of the adult, this can affect videos such as trailers of movies and games, which are watched by users of all ages. With the new age checks, content in this category will not be available to look if you have not connected, as a user has shared it.
