Julio César Chávez Jr. expelled in Mexico for alleged ties of the Sinaloa cartel

Almost two months after losing a fight against Youtuber Jake Paul, boxer Julio César Chávez Jr. was expelled in Mexico. Chávez Jr. is currently wanted for alleged cartel ties in Mexico.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the news on Tuesday of her daily press conference.

“I understand that he was expelled. I do not know if it was yesterday or this morning, but we were informed that he arrived in Mexico,” said Sheinbaum.

The boxer was arrested in the United States on July 3 for exceeding his visa and lying on a green card request. The arrest occurred less than a week after losing his fight against Paul on June 28 in Anaheim, California.

Chávez, 39, had a mandate for his arrest in Mexico for alleged trafficking in arms and drugs and links with the Sinaloa cartel. Alejandro Gertz Manero, attorney general of Mexico, said that the investigation into Chávez had started in 2019.

Sheinbaum said that after the arrest, she hoped that the boxer would be expelled to cope with his charges.

Chávez’s father was a massive celebrity in the 1980s and 1990s which mixed social circles with drug traffickers and said he was a friend with drug lord Amado Carrillo Fuentes.

The emblematic fighter defended his son after his arrest, but has not spoken since the expulsion.

The youngest Chávez fought against drug addiction for a large part of his boxing career, failing drug tests, serving suspensions and lacking in a blatant way while being widely criticized for his intermittent dedication to sport. On January 14, 2023, a district judge issued an arrest warrant against Chávez, for the offense of organized crime with the aim of committing crimes of arms trafficking and manufacturing of crimes, in the modality of those who participated in the creation of arms, ammunition, cartridges, explosives in the country; And those who make weapons, ammunition, cartridges and explosives without the corresponding license.

On January 7, 2024, the Los Angeles police service arrested Chavez and charged it with illegal possession of an assault and manufacturing or importing gun in Baril Court. The court sentenced Chavez to these accusations.

The DHS also suspects that Chavez would be considered an affiliate of the Sinaloa cartel, an designated foreign terrorist organization. The application of Chavez was based on his marriage to an American citizen, who is linked to the Sinaloa cartel by a previous relationship with the deceased son of the famous leader of the cartel Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, according to DHS.

The boxer was almost thrown outside the country months ago.
