City-wide drain cleaning campaign launched ahead of monsoon

Mayor Murtaza Wahab says the initiative aims to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and reduce the risk of urban flooding

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has decided to launch a comprehensive campaign to clean and de-silt major stormwater drains in the metropolis in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season, to ensure smooth flow of rainwater and reduce the risk of urban flooding.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by the mayor, which reviewed ongoing development projects and the overall performance of municipal services.

The meeting had detailed discussions on monsoon preparedness, urban infrastructure and measures to improve the city’s drainage system.

During the briefing, KMC Municipal Commissioner Abrar Jafar informed the meeting that tenders for cleaning and desilting of major drains have already been floated, while tenders will be opened on Monday.

He added that field works will begin immediately after the completion of the procurement process, ensuring that all major drains are cleared before the onset of monsoon rains.

He further said that KMC had allocated Rs 6 billion for the city-wide drain cleaning and desilting operation, terming it a reflection of the civic body’s commitment to protect citizens and infrastructure during the rainy season.

Mayor Wahab ordered that third-party consultants be engaged to ensure transparent monitoring, quality assurance and timely completion of the cleanup works. He stressed the need for strict supervision throughout the process to ensure efficient use of public funds and adherence to high standards.

KMC financial advisor Gulzar Abro presented district-wise details of allocated funds. According to the plan, Rs 680 million has been allocated for Central district, Rs 700 million each for West district and Keamari, Rs 560 million for South district-I, Rs 650 million for South-II after district bifurcation, Rs 730 million for East district, Rs 700 million for Korangi district and Rs 580 million for Malir district.

Besides, Rs 740 million and Rs 630 million have been allocated to various critical city-wide drainage points requiring special attention.
