Key suspects identified in Qazi Nisar Attack: IGP

The Police Inspector General (IGP) Gilgit-Baltistan Afzal Mohammad Butt revealed on Monday that eight to ten terrorists were involved in the assassination of the eminent religious scholar Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmad.

He said that the real authors had been identified and that their arrests were expected in the coming days.

Addressing the media representatives in Gilgit, the IGP said: “We have identified the real culprits behind the attack. Our intelligence and investigation teams work 24 hours a day to ensure that those responsible are arrested as soon as possible”.

He added that all law enforcement organizations were coordinating closely and that progress in the case had been significant since the incident took place.

Interior secretary, Gilgit-Baltistan, Ali Asghar, also confirmed that important evidence and tracks had been obtained through joint police efforts and intelligence institutions.

“This case is the subject of an investigation with the greatest gravity. The network involved is traced and no one will be spared,” said the interior secretary.

Earlier, the Minister of the Interior Gilgit-Baltistan Shams Lone said that substantial evidence had been collected concerning the terrorists involved in the attack on Ameer Ahl-E-Sunnat Wal Jamaat Gilgit-Baltistan and Kohistan, Qazi Nisar Ahmad.

“The organizations responsible for the application of laws and intelligence institutions work with the greatest precision to reach the culprits. The terrorists involved in this odious act will be prosecuted at their graves and carried before the public,” swore Lone.

The appellant a very publicized case, the Minister of the Interior said that the government dealt with the issue with total gravity. He also urged the public to stay patient and to avoid disseminating rumors on social networks.

“I appeal to people to play a positive role on social networks and to avoid speculation. The law will take its desired time,” he said.

The chief minister Haji Gulbar Khan visited Gilgit on Monday morning to find out about the health of Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmad. He expressed his solidarity and prayed for his rapid recovery.

Force commander Gilgit-Baltistan also visited the hospital, met Maulana Nisar and presented a bouquet of flowers as a gesture of good will. Subsequently, the chief secretary Gilgit-Baltistan also visited the hospital and expressed his best wishes for the restoration of the scientist.

Meanwhile, the Gilgit-Baltistan Apex Committee summoned an emergency session chaired by chief minister Haji Gulbar Khan in the Apex Committee in Judial. The meeting was followed by the commander of the FCNA, chief secretary, IGP, secretary of origin and main representatives of the law enforcement agencies and intelligence.

During the meeting, the participants firmly condemned terrorist attacks against Maulana Qazi Nisar Ahmad and judge Malik Inayat-rehman, reaffirming that peace and order in the region would be preserved at all costs and that the persons involved in these odious acts would face justice without delay.

Head Minister Haji Gulbar Khan called on the people to stay calm and to cooperate fully with security institutions to ensure lasting peace in Gilgit-Baltistan. Commander FCNA assured that the security forces were fully ready to protect citizens and maintain public order.
