- More clues about a foldable iPhone have emerged
- iOS apps are updated for larger screen size
- Apple also asks developers to plan larger screens
Rumors of an “iPhone Fold” have been circulating for years, but it looks like 2026 will be the year Apple finally releases a foldable phone – and many of the most recent hints in that direction have come from Apple itself.
As spotted by MacRumors, more native iOS apps are being updated to include a landscape mode option, so they’ll adjust when you rotate your iPhone (and fit nicely on a foldable iPhone’s large screen when it’s open as well).
Updated apps include Apple Music, Reminders, Weather, Home, Podcasts, Fitness, Health, Shortcuts, Find My, Voice Memos and the Apple Watch app, so this is clearly a concerted and deliberate effort on the part of Apple developers.
These landscape orientation modes aren’t just the standard layout flipped on their side. Many apps have left-aligned sidebars to make it easier to navigate those apps when they are in landscape mode or on a larger screen.
Developer alert
Apple is flatly telling developers to start designing their iPhone apps for widescreen aspect ratios. This is the biggest clue that the iPhone Ultra Fold will arrive in September. Video source: Apple Platforms State of the Union pic.twitter.com/33Vm1rkC8DJune 10, 2026
Landscape modes aren’t the only hint we’ve had about an upcoming iPhone Fold, either. As spotted by Vadim Yuryev, in one of the presentations posted online as part of WWDC 2026, Apple’s Cindy Barrett encouraged developers to code for different screen sizes.
“You’re designing for a dynamic range of sizes and aspect ratios,” Barrett said while showing some of the changes Apple is making with iOS 27 — another indication that iPhone apps now need to be more flexible.
So while Apple hasn’t actually acknowledged that a foldable iPhone is on the way, it appears the rumors are true: the device will actually launch around September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.
And while we’re calling it iPhone Fold here, those in the know suggest it will be called iPhone Ultra, a naming scheme Apple has used with its products in the past.
