11 injured, 8 critical in accident on Shangla Karakoram highway

At least 11 people were injured in a road accident on the Karakoram Highway in Shangla district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Friday evening.

Rescue 1122 Shangla District Emergency Officer Eng Malik Sherdil Khan said The Express PK Press Club that the incident occurred near Maira area in Shangla jurisdiction after dark, apparently due to poor visibility on the main highway.

He said initial reports indicate a collision between a rideshare vehicle and a van left several passengers seriously injured.

Residents, along with police and rescue teams, immediately launched a rescue operation. He said Rescue 1122 personnel quickly arrived at the scene and provided first aid to the injured before transporting them to nearby medical facilities.

He said all the injured were initially taken to the Basic Health Unit (BHU) in Maira. However, due to the severity of the injuries, eight seriously injured people were later shifted to Ayub Medical Complex in Abbottabad for advanced medical treatment.

A local passerby said that the passengers traveling in the van were believed to be from Azad Jammu and Kashmir, while those in the car belonged to Bisham and Chakesar areas of Shangla district.
