The 2026 World Cup is finally upon us, and although it marks the 23rd edition of the global tournament which takes place every four years, this edition of the event is unlike any of its predecessors.

For starters, the 2026 World Cup marks the first time the event has been co-hosted by three separate countries, with the United States, Canada and Mexico sharing honors. Widely distributed host sites across North America are not the only unique factors, however.

The 2026 World Cup will also feature a larger number of teams, expanding from the traditional 32 teams to 48. The addition of 16 teams also comes with modified group stage play, ways to progress, and tiebreaker scenarios that will be worth watching closely throughout the tournament.

How do teams progress out of the World Cup group stage?

The top two teams from each of the 12 groups of four teams will advance to the knockout stage. In the round robin group stage, teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw, and zero points for a loss. This is the same format we’ve seen in previous World Cups, but with 24 teams automatically advancing from the group stage instead of 16.

The main difference is that there will be an additional round of knockout matches, as the top eight third-placed teams from the group stage will also qualify. This turns the traditional Round of 16 into a Round of 16 as the first set of Round of 16 matches.

What are the tiebreakers for the World Cup group stage and third places?

Since the group stage is a round-robin tournament, with each of the four teams playing the other three teams in their group once, ties in the standings will most likely occur.

If two or more teams from a group finish with an equal number of points, the following tiebreaker rules (in order) will determine which country advances:

  • Points obtained during the face-to-face
  • Overall goal differential in all group matches
  • Goals scored in all group matches
  • Fair play points: Fewer yellow cards and red cards in all group matches, with yellow cards counting for -1 point, indirect red cards (two yellows) for -3 points, a direct red card for -4 points and a yellow card followed by a direct red card for -5 points.
  • Draw

As for how eight of the possible 12 teams finishing third in the group stage advance to the single-table round of 16, another set of tiebreaker rules will likely need to be implemented:

  • Most points in group stage
  • Superior goal difference
  • Most goals scored
  • Best fair play score
  • FIFA World Ranking
