- Digital Foundry predicts that GTA6 will not support 60FPS on console
- The game is suggested to run at 30 FPS, including on PS5 Pro
- A 40FPS mode could be on the table for PS5 Pro if 60FPS is absent
Grand Theft Auto 6 may not support 60 FPS on current-gen consoles, including the PlayStation 5 Pro, at launch, meaning 30 FPS will be the benchmark.
That’s according to tech experts at Digital Foundry, who suggest that after recent game news, pre-order screenshots, and other images, they’re still not convinced that GTA6 will allow a 60FPS mode.
The main concern is the game’s CPU demand on current-gen consoles, PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S, which will likely be significant.
“In RPGs, dense urban locations are most likely to decrease frame rates, and the GTA6 the world seems on another level of grandeur, more difficult than that of Dragon’s Dogma 2 Or Baldur’s Gate 3” said Digital Foundry.
There’s also the matter of traversal, whether by land, sea or air, and vehicles will “require their own computationally expensive physics, of the type that normally forces console simulation games to 30 FPS.” For this reason, “60FPS feels like a bridge too far.”
Digital Foundry also suggested that the PS5 Pro would not be able to produce GTA6 at 60 FPS, as “the console offers only a tiny improvement in CPU performance over the base PS5, with most of its benefits coming from better GPU power, improved RT acceleration, and PSSR upscaling support.”
CPU limitations would mean that GTA6 will launch at 30FPS on PS5 Pro; however, he notes that a 40FPS mode might be possible if 60FPS is not an option.
It should be noted that GTA 5 And Red Dead Redemption 2 was also launched at 30 FPS on last-gen consoles, but Rockstar later released 60 FPS updates for current-gen consoles, including the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Series S.
If GTA6 launches at 30FPS, a post-launch update to 60FPS mode could be planned.
Rockstar hasn’t revealed any details yet, but GTA6 pre-orders have officially started.
The game launches on November 19 and will cost $79.99 / AU$129.95 / £69.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 / AU$159.95 / £89.99 for the Ultimate edition. Pre-loads begin on November 12.
