The producers behind Spider Worms films have revealed whether they would be willing to oversee Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) reboot.
In an exclusive conversation with TechRadar, Phil Lord and Chris Miller didn’t rule out the possibility. However, they also admitted that “many assumptions” would have to come into place for this to become a reality.
The discussion was part of a larger interview about the duo’s new sci-fi epic. Hail Mary Project (NB: see my Hail Mary Project review to see if it’s worth watching). The Ryan Gosling-led film is the first big screen project directed by Lord and Miller since 2014. 22 Jump Streeta result of the myriad production roles both men have held over the past decade.

Among these productions, four focus on Spider-Man – or rather on alternative versions of the superhero pseudonym of a certain Peter Parker. Indeed, Lord and Miller supervised work on the first two Spider Worms films and is also leading the development of the final entry in the film trilogy, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.
Additionally, Lord and Miller executive produced Black Spidera 1930s live-action show, directed by Nicolas Cage, coming to MGM+ (US) and Prime Video (international) on May 27.
Given their involvement in numerous non-Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects featuring various incarnations of the wall-crawler, the pair seem ideally suited to lead version 2.0 of the SSU.
Last December, Sony Pictures appeared to end its Spider-Man-less film franchise after a series of critical and commercial failures. However, just two months later, studio head Tom Rothman indicated (according to the On the Town podcast) that Sony planned to reboot SSU at some point.
In the event that Sony asks them to be the creative overlords of the SSU – you know, like Kevin Feige at Marvel, James Gunn/Peter Safran at DC, and Dave Filoni/Lynwen Brennan for Star Wars – then would Lord and Miller be interested?
“It’s a big ‘if,'” Lord replied. “That’s the biggest ‘if’ in the world.”
“There are so many what-ifs in the universe,” Miller added. “But as you know, we’re big fans of Spider-Man and that whole universe, so who knows?”
