Jim Furyk is returning as captain of the U.S. Ryder Cup team next year, the Associated Press reported Friday.

It’s a blast from the past, even if it’s not necessarily a positive past: Furyk captained the 2018 team that bombed in France, his captain’s picks combining to go 2-10.

Keegan Bradley was captain of last year’s Bethpage Black team, which had an embarrassing first two days but put up a valiant effort for an unprecedented singles comeback on Sunday. They narrowly fell short, 15-13, after starting the day seven points behind.

Members of this American team supported Bradley after their defeat, but it seemed to be for nothing.

Furyk led the Americans to victory as Presidents Cup captain in 2024, and he was considered a reliable voice as Bradley’s assistant in Bethpage.

Furyk’s team in 2018 also had issues behind the scenes, as Patrick Reed was not happy about being benched twice. He also blamed Jordan Spieth for the two not playing together, which Reed said could have been successful.

Furyk would be the fourth American captain to get a second chance since 1979, considered the modern era of the Ryder Cup, when continental Europe was part of it, alongside Davis Love III (2012 and 2016), Tom Watson (1993 and 2014) and Jack Nicklaus (1983 and 1987).

Tiger Woods’ name was mentioned for the tournament in Ireland, but he withdrew shortly after his arrest on March 27. It was unclear which direction Woods was leaning when his SUV hit the back of a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck on a residential road in Florida, causing his SUV to spin onto its side. Woods was arrested and briefly jailed after Florida authorities determined he was impaired.

Europe has won 11 of the last 15 matches since Oak Hill in 1995. Last year, they became the first team to win back-to-back events since winning three in a row between 2010 and 2014. It was also the first time a team had won on foreign soil since Europe’s Miracle in Medina in 2012.

Luke Donald will attempt to become the first captain to win three times in a row in September 2027 at Adare Manor. Europe sent all but one player from the 2023 team back to Bethpage, the only difference between an identical twin brother.
