- 007 First Light has a unique “license to kill” mechanism

- This shows how James Bond “will kill when he needs to” but is “not someone who enjoys killing” according to one developer.
Upcoming action game 007 First Light is filled with guns, but there are some key restrictions on when the player can actually use them. It features a unique “license to kill” mechanic, which prevents players from using deadly force unless deemed necessary for survival.
According to lead combat designer Tom Marcham, this is a key element of protagonist James Bond’s character. “He’s not going to walk into a space and shoot the first person he sees,” he said in a new interview with TechRadar Gaming.
“He will kill when he needs to, but he’s not someone who enjoys killing. […] I think it’s very important to get this across. I think this matches the IP.

Marcham also revealed that the team found some interesting ways to “play with” the mechanics. “We [sometimes] bring in a bunch of guys who are clearly going to kill you, and we’re not kidding,” he continued. “We’re like ‘no, shoot these guys’ and we do that throughout the campaign in different ways that I can’t wait for players to experience.”
This gives each encounter “a very unique flavor” where you’re encouraged to “rely on gadgets and distraction rather than just headshotting the first person you see each time.”
The team also felt that this would allow the game’s in-depth melee combat system to shine. That said, he was careful to explain that fights always carry a risk of escalation.
“If you let this hand-to-hand fight drag on and someone pulls out a gun, that’s it. Hats off to you,” he said. “From then on it was violence and you let this whole place go crazy.”
Particular attention has also been paid to moments where players may not be performing at their best. “I think you’ll feel a little scrappy. I think it’ll be a little dirty and dirty, and you’ll get hit a lot,” Marcham said.
“We invested a lot in the way Bond is hit and how he turns around when he’s kicked and crushed, and that’s something we took from the film. He gets beaten up in a lot of films.”
It looks like Bond will receive his fair share of beatings when 007 First Light will launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC on May 27, 2026. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is also planned for later this year.
