Iran has executed two people accused of spying for Israel despite international calls to stop the execution following US President Donald Trump’s letter to Congress declaring the war against Iran has ended.
Iranian media reports that two men, Yaquoub Karimpour and Nasser Bakarzadeh, were executed after being convicted of spying for Israel, with the head of the Islamic Republic’s judiciary warning of no leniency.
Karimpour was arrested following the 12-day war against Israel last year. He was accused of cooperating with Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, by sharing sensitive national security information. Bakarzadeh has been in detention since 2023.
The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) claimed that prisoners were pressured into forced confessions. They did not have access to a lawyer or their family.
Karimpour, 41, was a follower of the Yarsan religious minority while Bakarzadeh was a Kurdish political prisoner, Euronews reports.
Reports claim that Iran has intensified its execution campaign against prisoners accused of espionage, particularly during the ongoing war against the United States and Israel.
According to the human rights organization Hengaw, at least 26 prisoners were executed in April 2026.
The head of Iran’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei, said: “We will certainly not be negligent or lenient in prosecuting and legally punishing any criminal whose hands are stained with the blood of our people.” »
He added that Iran pays no attention to the “bluster of arrogant powers and their propaganda mouthpieces.”
