Coppa Italia 2026 final: preview
The teams faced off on Saturday in a dress rehearsal, a match that neither Maurizio Sarri, his players nor Lazio fans will want to dwell on. They were already 2-0 down when Alessio Romagnoli saw red early in the second half, thanks to goals from Lautaro Martinez and Petar Sucic. Henrikh Mkhitaryan made three.
The generous reading is that Sarri fielded a changed team and the players themselves were saving themselves for this final. Then again, the Biancocelesti have lost seven of their last nine meetings with Inter, drawing the other two. The cumulative score of the last three meetings of these teams in Rome: 0-11.
But there is no greater motivation than silverware, especially for a club who last won a trophy – the Coppa Italia – in 2019. After defeat to the Nerazzurri at the weekend, the Coccarda is now also their only route back to European football.
Lazio’s problem is goals. Gustav Isaksen and Tijjani Noslin are their top scorers with just five each, and as exciting as their journey in the competition has been, with victory over AC Milan and penalties against holders Bologna and Atalanta, Inter are difficult to contain.
They have failed to find the net in just four of the 51 games they have played this season. In fact, it was their most prolific goalscoring campaign since 1929/30. Lautaro, Marcus Thuram and Hakan Calhanoglu, currently out of action with a thigh injury, are all in double figures, and several teammates could well join them.
Lazio TO DOhowever, we have players for big occasions. Pedro’s late double dashed Inter’s title hopes on the penultimate weekend of last season, while Edoardo Motta saved four of Atalanta’s five penalties to send Le Aquile to the final with a sense of destiny.
