Amazon Gaming has confirmed that Amazon Game Studios will handle publishing any potential content. 007 First Light sequels.
007 First Light was a big success for IO Interactive, selling 1.5 million copies in its first 24 hours, a milestone reached faster than any other in the studio. Hitman games.
Potential sequels are a possibility at this point, but according to Amazon Gaming general manager Jeff Gattis, IO Interactive won’t publish them itself.
“We don’t have [make First Light]”, Gattis said. “We have an ownership interest in it because we now own the intellectual property, but this acquisition of the intellectual property took place after the First light The IO deal was already done.
The CEO explained that although Amazon “does not have full rights to this product”, First light James Bond,” possible sequels will be “made by MGM and, theoretically, Amazon Game Studios.”
IOI started to develop 007 First Light when the Bond franchise was under the control of MGM and EON Productions; however, Amazon acquired MGM in 2021, a year later First light was announced.
Amazon and MGM still collaborated with IOI after the acquisition, but the company will now play a more central role in potential sequels.
Fans reacting to the news are worried about the future of IOI’s Bond games, with one fan on Reddit saying it appears Amazon “might be hinting that the sequel will be made without IO Interactive, if so Amazon is making a big mistake.”
There’s a big distinction between publishing and developing a game, so it’s important to note that it appears IO Interactive will still be the one creating the Bond games, while Amazon Game Studios will fund them, which could mean the latter will have more input into the projects.
Gattis went on to say that Amazon is eager to expand into games so it can create synergy with its TV shows and movies, something it could do with IO Interactive games and the company’s next James Bond movie, currently in the works.
“We think this is a real opportunity for us to create intellectual property that expands — or sort of expands — TV shows and movies,” Gattis said. “So there will be a Tomb Raider TV show on Prime Video that will accompany the games. We have a lot of stuff in the works on new games that will tie into the Prime Video IP.”
TechRadar UK Home Entertainment Editor Amelia Schwanke reviewed 007 First Light four stars in its review, calling it “a blockbuster original Bond story” that is “the closest game that’s ever come to making me feel like I’m starring in a Bond film.”
“IO Interactive takes the stealth sandbox of Hitman, the intense thrills of Uncharted and the experimental espionage of Batman: Arkham, and reshapes them into a cinematic travel spy thriller filled with secret missions, explosive action and cool gadgets,” Schwanke said. “Even though the campaign’s immersion sometimes lags, this stylish original story still feels like a triumphant return for the most iconic secret agent.”
