- Affordable audiophile brand Sivga just unveiled new in-ear monitors
- Lyrebird uses four drivers for versatile sound
- Sony’s recently released Pro rivals now have tough competition
Sivga, a Chinese headphone brand that has already wowed us with its wooden headphones, including the Sivga Robin and Sivga Oriole, has a new pair of wired headphones that it wants you to hear.
The Sivga Lyrebird are its new in-ear monitors (IEMs), and they’ve just been released for $149 / £149 (around AU$300). That’s not the cheapest price we’ve ever seen on this type of wired offering (Sivga itself has also launched cheaper, more EarPods-like headphones called the M260), but since audiophile-adjacent IEMs can sometimes cost thousands, they’re still pretty affordable.
Don’t know what IEMs are? These are wired headphones, but intended for professionals or audiophiles concerned with detailed and natural sound. They often house a complex array of speakers within their shell – so they’re often more expensive than your average wired headphones.
With the continued resurgence of wired headphones, IEMs are seeing their profile rise in popularity. Last week, Sony revealed its own IER-M500 Pro option, for a little less than the Lyrebird. However, when you look at the specs, Sivga’s new option could blow Sony’s Pro IEMs out of the water, at least on paper, with bigger and more drivers.
And this lyrebird, you can’t change it
Sivga has equipped its Lyrebirds with four speakers (the Sonys have a single 5mm speaker). This is about providing a wide soundstage, while also allowing each speaker to focus on a certain part of the frequency spectrum.
For the low end, there’s a 10mm polymer composite dynamic driver, plus a balanced armature driver for vocals, a planar mic for treble, and a 9.2mm piezoelectric ceramic driver for higher frequencies.
The headphones connect using a 120cm cable that has silver and gold plated copper connectors and ends in a 4.4mm jack.
Sivga continued his wooden design aesthetic with the Lyrebird, as you can see in the photos. The headphones are handcrafted and coated in resin to ensure durability.
The Sivga Lyrebirds announcement coincides with CanJam London, which brings many more audio announcements. So, before the day is over, we may see many more IEMs to enjoy.
