The first full moon of spring, known as the pink moon, will rise on Friday April 12, 2025, offering spectacular views through North America and beyond.
Although it does not really appear pink, the name of the moon comes from pink phlox flowers which flourish in early spring, signaling the arrival of the season.
The full moon will reach its peak at 8:23 p.m. HAE on Saturday April 12.
It will increase in the eastern sky an hour only before the peak of the full moon in certain regions, which makes it a rare event.
The best time to see the pink moon will be during its ascent, just after sunset, when it appears greater and more dynamic due to a phenomenon called “the illusion of the moon”. This optical illusion makes the moon larger and brighter as it rises above the horizon.
For those in eastern North America, including New York and Los Angeles, the Moon will rise near sunset. In New York, Sunset is at 7:32 p.m. Hae, with Moonrise at 7:31 p.m. Hae.
In Los Angeles, the sunset will occur at 7:22 p.m. Pdt, and the Moon will rise at 7:26 p.m. Pdt. Meanwhile, in London, the Moon will rise at 8:52 pm BST on Sunday April 13, after sunset at 7:53 p.m.
Pink moon in Pakistan
In Pakistan, the pink moon will be visible on Sunday April 13 with Moonrise around 9:08 p.m. UTC in Karachi.
The full moon will be visible all night, because it rises to the east to the sunset and takes place to the west at sunrise.
This full moon is also important for its connection with Easter. It is the “Pascale Moon”, the first full moon that follows the spring equinox, determining the date of Easter Sunday. This year, Easter will fall on Sunday, April 20.
In the future, the next full moon will be the Flower Moon on May 12, 2025. There are a total of 12 full moons in 2025, including three supermoons and two total lunar eclipses, with a visible in Karachi on September 7 to 8.
