- Apple lost a $250 million class action lawsuit
- The case concerns delayed Apple Intelligence features affecting Siri
- If you’re eligible, you could get up to $95 per device
It’s disappointing enough that Apple Intelligence’s much-hyped overhaul has been plagued by delays, leaving its virtual assistant Siri rather toothless. But some users have complained that they felt cheated into buying an iPhone that arrived without any of the features on offer – and they just won a massive payout from Apple.
Indeed, the details of the settlement of a class action involving Apple have just been revealed and the final figure amounts to 250 million dollars. If you are eligible for compensation under this mammoth fine, you could have to pay up to $95 per device.
At the time, the case claimed that Apple had promoted “AI capabilities that did not exist then, do not exist now, and will not exist for two years or more.” He also alleged that Apple’s Siri ads “saturate the Internet, television and other airwaves to create a clear and reasonable consumer expectation that these transformative features will be available as soon as the iPhone is released.”

Apple first settled the case in December 2025, but details of the compensation have only just been released. Affected users must pay $25 per device, but this could rise to $95 per device if the number of complaints turns out to be low.
To be eligible, you must have purchased an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone between June 10, 2024 and March 29, 2025. This includes the iPhone 16 lineup, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. You must also have purchased your iPhone in the United States.
If you wish to make a claim, you will need to submit proof that you purchased an eligible device. This may include a serial number, Apple account information, and a cell phone number. Apple will begin soliciting claims within 45 days of May 5, 2026.
A costly situation
At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2024, Apple showed off its artificial intelligence (AI) system – dubbed Apple Intelligence – and explained how it would revolutionize all the best iPhones. Planned features included, among other things, better context awareness and the ability to take action in other applications. Best of all, Apple included these improvements in its marketing materials for the iPhone 16 series arriving later that year.
For some users, these ads and marketing pitches implied that buying one of these phones would get you the promised Apple Intelligence upgrades. Yet Apple has had to push back many of these features, leaving its phones without many of the most advanced weapons in the Apple Intelligence arsenal.
This has proven very costly for the company, and not just in financial terms, as Apple Intelligence is widely considered to be lagging behind competitors like ChatGPT and Gemini. The delayed Siri features are expected to arrive in iOS 27, which debuts at WWDC on June 8, and TechRadar’s Lance Ulanoff believes this will be Apple’s last chance to make up lost ground to its competitors.
In a statement to 9to5Mac, Apple remained in a defiant mood, saying: “Since launching Apple Intelligence, we’ve introduced dozens of features in numerous languages that are integrated across Apple platforms, relevant to what users do every day and built with privacy protections at every step. These include Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Scrubbing and more.”
“Apple has reached an agreement to resolve complaints related to the availability of two additional features, the company continued. “We resolved this issue to remain focused on what we do best, which is providing the most innovative products and services to our users.”
But Apple will have to do more than just talk when WWDC rolls around, because users already seem to be abandoning Apple Intelligence. If he doesn’t keep his promises with Siri, a $250 million lawsuit might be the least of his worries.
