Day 28 of 2026 FIFA World Cup is a day of rest, with no match on the program. The tournament ends after Argentina’s superb comeback against Egypt and Switzerland’s victory from the penalty spot against Colombia which closed the round of 16. The quarterfinals resume on Thursday, when Kylian Mbappé and France take on Morocco in Boston, kicking off a sequence that also includes Spain against Belgium, Norway against England and Argentina against Switzerland. World Cup program for Wednesday July 8
There is no World Cup match today. The tournament takes place on a scheduled rest day between the round of 16 and quarterfinals, which begin Thursday. Here is the full program for the quarter-finals:
France versus Morocco
France swept Group I, outscoring their opponents 10-2 with wins over Senegal, Iraq and Norway, then beat Sweden 3-0 in the round of 16 and beat Paraguay 1-0 in the round of 16. Mbappé’s seven goals are just behind Messi for the tournament lead and Michael Olise’s five assists pace all players. Morocco finished second in Group C, escaped on penalties against the Netherlands in the round of 16, then beat Canada 3-0 in the round of 16, with B. Diaz’s four assists among the best of the tournament.
Spain vs Belgium
Spain did not allow a goal throughout the tournament, winning Group H with a scoreless draw against Cape Verde and shutout victories over Saudi Arabia and Uruguay, then blanking Austria 3-0 in the round of 16 and Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16. Belgium won Group G undefeated, needed overtime to beat Senegal 3-2 in the round of 16, then beat the United States 4-1 in the round of 16, with Leandro Trossard among the tournament’s assist leaders.
Norway vs England
Norway finished second in Group I behind France, then beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in the round of 16 and upset Brazil 2-1 in the round of 16. Erling Haaland’s seven goals (tied with the aforementioned Mbappé) are behind only Lionel Messi for the tournament lead. England won Group L unbeaten, beat DR Congo 2-1 in the round of 16, then outlasted Mexico 3-2 in the round of 16, with captain Harry Kane’s six goals among the best of the tournament.
Argentina vs. Switzerland
Argentina swept Group J, beat Cape Verde 3-2 in overtime in the round of 16, then recovered from a two-goal deficit to beat Egypt 3-2 in the round of 16 thanks to Enzo Fernandez’s stoppage-time winner, with Messi setting the all-time World Cup assists record in the process. Switzerland won Group B, beat Algeria 2-1 in the round of 16, then outlasted Colombia on penalties to reach the quarterfinals.
