- Assassin’s Creed Black Flag resynced creative director Paul Fu says the team “expanded” Edward Kenway’s story with new content
- Fu says the team wanted to stick to the original “as much as possible.”
- The team delved deeper into the theme of “greed”
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag resynced Creative director Paul Fu confirmed that Ubisoft did not change Edward Kenway’s story in the upcoming remake, but developed the character with additional content.
Speaking in an interview with TechRadar Gaming during a Resynchronized Black Flag preview event in Paris, Fu explained that the team did not feel obligated to change Kenway’s introduction to make it more fleshed out and wanted to stick as closely to Kenway’s introduction as possible. Black flag writer Darby McDevitt’s original vision “as much as possible.”
The story of Black flag begins with Kenway already equipped with his athletic parkour abilities as a pirate, before joining the Brotherhood as an official assassin. While Fu understands why some think his abilities should be explained, he said the team doesn’t feel the need.
“We haven’t toyed with the idea of changing the Leap of Faith or anything like that,” Fu said, “because I understand there’s a train of thought: ‘Why was Edward able to do all these things despite the fact that he wasn’t an assassin?’ But it was explained beautifully in the original game, where it says, “Anything goes.” I think this phrase is really very famous. And we decided, okay, that’s enough for us. We’re going to stick to it.”
Fu refers to the fundamental principle of The Brotherhood: “Nothing is true, everything is permitted”, but in the story Kenway initially interprets it selfishly as “Anything is permitted?” I like the sound of that,” before later finding more meaning in the words.
Although Kenway’s story was not changed, the developers explored the theme of “greed” from the original game and “expanded it with the new content”.
“I’m not going to spoil it too much, but we thought it was a strong juxtaposition with who he is, who his inner self is, deep down he’s a really nice guy who wants to provide for his family and he loves his friends, but because of greed, things don’t work out to his advantage,” Fu explained.
“And we felt that theme was very, very strong, a little dark in the original. Black flag. [We] We wanted to develop this subject, and we did so.”
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag resynced will launch on July 9 on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
