- Battlefield 6 gets its biggest card today as part of the Season 3 launch
- The Railway to Golmud is a reimagining of the Battleground 4 Golmud Railway map
- “Everyone was excited to have the opportunity to bring this iconic card back to Battlefield 6“said a developer
Battlefield 6 Season 3 arrives today and introduces a host of new content, including the biggest map the game has seen yet.
Railway to Golmud is an extensive reimaging of the fan-favorite Golmud Railway from Battleground 4. While very familiar to long-time fans of the series, the map’s setting has been moved from rural China to Tajikistan in order to more closely match the narrative of the most recent game, and the layout has been subtly altered.
In a recent interview with TechRadar Gaming, executive producer Philippe Ducharme explained that the map’s inclusion and these changes were driven by player feedback. He described fans clamoring for larger cards from launch, calling them “part of the DNA” of the series.
“It was important to be able to bring one of the favorites that delivers that all-out war experience to a very large map with a long engagement range,” he said.
“But also places where you can have close combat zones, or sections to really get into close encounters in places like the village. For us, Golmud ticked those boxes, and when we reviewed it with the team, everyone was excited to have the opportunity to bring this iconic map back to Battlefield 6“.
Work in progress
The card has been tested extensively in Battlefield Laboratories with “very positive” overall feedback, but some pain points that needed to be resolved for it to work well in Battlefield 6.
“We’ve revisited the terrain, for example, to have a little more hilly terrain, to not have really long lines of sight everywhere. We have more cover to try to balance out long-term engagements and provide a little more opportunity to hide from those pesky snipers,” he revealed.
The team also received complaints that the airspace was too limited from players who liked to pilot vehicles, leading to its expansion.
Ducharme added that the team is always listening for feedback and carefully monitoring player data to detect issues.
“The worst mistake we can make as a developer is to drink our own Kool-Aid and say, ‘yeah, everything’s fine.’ People are just complaining,” he argued. “We need to keep an open mind.”
“When there are complaints, our job is to review the data and make sure it is substantiated,” he added. “There are always louder returns, but we want to validate them with data to make sure it’s not just the loud players coming out on top.”
Battlefield 6 is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
