As rumors claimed, The Witcher 3: Wild Huntthe third extension of, Songs from the pastwas initially scheduled to launch this year before being pushed back to 2027.
That’s according to Michał Nowakowski, co-CEO of CD Projekt Red, who revealed during the company’s latest financial results call (via Eurogamer) that the team “had a moment where our plans for Songs from the past would be released this year”, but decided with the development team that “the game would be launched in 2027 to achieve the best possible result from a consumer point of view, which in the end, truth be told, is the only thing that really matters”.
“For several quarters, we have revealed that our pipeline includes unannounced projects that are in advanced production,” added CFO Piotr Nielubowicz. “One of them is the expansion co-developed by Fool’s Theory. Our initial plans assumed that Songs from the past could be released this year; however, we have decided that it will launch in 2027.”
Although unfortunately we won’t be playing Songs of the StepThis year, CDPR confirmed that the expansion will take place at Gamescom 2026 in August. However, there will be no practical demonstration at the show, but rather a presentation like the previous one. Witcher 3 enlargements.
“I can’t really go into detail, but what I will say is that historically when we were showing Witcher “, explained Nowakowski.
“These are big games, really big RPG experiences, and having a five-minute session with a game like that wouldn’t really do much for you. So we’re more likely to follow in the footsteps of what we’ve done in the past with The Witcher 3 or, for that matter, with Cyberpunk when we also announced it.”
They were also asked about the scale of Songs of the Past and whether it would be Hearts of stone And Blood and wineNowakowski saying that “when it comes to scope” it’s like the latter, “but it’s super subjective”.
“It really depends on how you’re going to play, what level of play you have,” he said. “But we are definitely in the midst of a big expansion, that’s the message I would like to send.”
On the theme of The Witcher 4Nowakowski referred to Songs of the Past as a “prologue”, but did not specify whether the expansion would be a prelude to the upcoming game, or its own standalone story for The Witcher 3.
“Above all, we really wanted to deliver a great experience for fans – a really cool expansion that’s going to make people happy to come back to The Witcher 3 “, said Nowakoski. “But of course, indirectly, yes, it is a reminder [about the franchise]. It is, in a way, a prologue, even if it is not a prologue verbatim in [that] It’s a prologue to the real Witcher 4.”
He also agreed that the expansion could be seen as a way to keep some chatter on The Witcher 3but said, “These are all additional side effects.”
“The bottom line, from our perspective, is to deliver a high-quality, fun experience to existing fans of The Witcher” added Nowakoski.
Songs from the past will arrive before The Witcher 4.WWhen asked if the next game would also receive expansions, the CFO reiterated the company’s “ambitious” plans to release three Witcher games over a six-year period, but admitted: “it would be difficult, to be very honest, for us to add an expansion to the upcoming trilogy – that’s where we are here and now with this particular issue.”
