There will be Disney+ viewers who haven’t watched Daredevil and, by proxy, will have no idea who he is, so let’s take a brief trip down memory lane.
In the Netflix series, Mahoney was a New York City police officer who regularly helped Matt Murdock and Franklin “Foggy” Nelson with their legal cases. A strong ally of both men, Mahoney would pass on crucial evidence and/or information to them so that they could successfully defend their innocent clients in court and bring the criminals to justice. This included helping to bring down Wilson Fisk and taking down organized gangs, including The Hand in. The defendersaka the Netflix crossover miniseries Marvel-Verse.
One of the few honest cops operating in the infamous New York neighborhood known as Hell’s Kitchen, Mahoney also sometimes aided Daredevil, aka Murdock’s alter ego, in fighting crime. His relationship with the eponymous hero was rocky, however, with the duo only agreeing on the shared vision of keeping New York City safe.
Daredevil isn’t the only vigilante Mahoney was associated with. After being promoted to Detective Sergeant, he was also tasked with tracking down Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, and the anti-hero’s friend-turned-enemy, Billy Russo/Jigsaw. The last time we saw Mahoney in Netflix’s Marvel-Verse was in The Punisher season 2 finale, with the NYPD officer closing the Jigsaw case after his disappearance at the hands of Castle.
Why did Brett Mahoney just appear in Daredevil: Born Again?
Considering he’s a long-time associate of Murdock and company, it’s odd that Mahoney has only just returned to the group. Daredevil: Born Again. After all, Murdock – as a civilian and vigilante alias – has had run-ins with the New York Police Department and other law enforcement agencies, such as Fisk’s anti-vigilante task force, both on the streets of New York and in his police precinct.
So surely Murdock and Mahoney would have crossed paths at some point? Maybe, but there’s a very simple explanation for why they haven’t gotten together until now.

However, following an almost complete creative overhaul of Daredevil: Born Again in October 2023, Marvel decided to align this series more closely with its ancestor.
Of course, the decision to turn Born again in a Daredevil The sequel series gave birth to the Frankenstein’s monster of a first season, whose story, character arcs, and overall tone were all uneven. Nonetheless, this creative reset now allows characters like Foggy, Page, Jessica Jones, and Mahoney, among others, to become permanent fixtures in the MCU. We recently learned that more Netflix Marvel-Verse characters will appear in Born again season 3 as well, with Luke Cage and Danny Rand also set to join the party.
The first season of the Marvel series Phase 6 didn’t have room to bring them all back simultaneously. But, with Born again Firmly established on one of Disney+’s top streaming services, its second season has the time and space – just like its third season – to finally welcome individuals like Mahoney back into the fold.
