Manchester City on Thursday officially completed the signing of English midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a fee of 116 million pounds ($155 million).

The club record fee for City eclipses the 100 million pounds ($139 million) paid for Jack Grealish in 2021 and is among the largest ever in the Premier League.

Anderson, 23, signed a five-year contract.

“City are one of the biggest clubs in the world and the squad they have is incredible, so strong in every position. As soon as I knew they wanted me I was absolutely determined to make it happen,” Anderson said. “As a footballer you want to test yourself at the highest level. Being at City means I have that opportunity.”

Anderson is City’s first major signing since iconic manager Pep Guardiola resigned at the end of last season. A new era begins under the leadership of former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.

“Elliot is one of the most outstanding young midfield talents in world football at the moment. He offers energy, exceptional work rate and an exceptional passing range,” said City director of football Hugo Viana. “His progress over the last few years has been truly impressive and underlines his desire to be the best player he can be.

“At only 23 years old there are plenty of opportunities for development in the years to come and we believe he can develop into a complete midfielder. Manchester City is the best place for him to develop his game and continue to improve, we are happy he sees things the same way as us.”

Anderson began his career at Newcastle and joined Forest in 2024, where he later broke into the England squad.

He was a key member of Thomas Tuchel’s England team that won bronze at the World Cup.

“As soon as I arrive in Manchester after a break, I will do everything I can to establish myself in the City team,” he said. “This is a club built to win trophies and compete at the highest level. That’s exciting for any footballer.”

England striker Morgan Rogers completed his move to Chelsea earlier this week for a British record transfer fee of £117 million.
