One of the best VPN providers removes the password, at least as a requirement.
ExpressVPN added password login, allowing users to access their account without typing anything at all.
Instead of a password, you log in using the screen lock already on your device, like a fingerprint or face scan. This means nothing more to remember or anything to grasp each time.
The change was announced on Tuesday (July 21) and is part of a broader overhaul of the ExpressVPN+ dashboard, which the company is turning into a single home for your entire subscription.
What’s new in ExpressVPN+
ExpressVPN+ now supports passwords, so you can access your account without entering a password. The company notes that this can make your life easier when setting up the VPN on a new device.
The redesigned dashboard sits behind this connection. Rather than navigating between separate apps and account pages, you get an overview of what’s protecting you, what products you’ve set up, and anything else that needs your attention.
Depending on your ExpressVPN plans and regions, ExpressVPN says it can pull information from tools like ExpressKeys and Identity Defender, and you can also purchase and manage Holiday.com travel eSIMs from the same place.
How passwords work and why they are more secure
A password exchanges your password for a pair of cryptographic keys. The public key resides on the service’s server while the private key remains locked on your device, and no shared secrets cross the network to be intercepted by an attacker.
It’s this design that makes passkeys phishing-resistant: there’s no password to fool you, and the credentials only work on ExpressVPN’s real login page.
It’s an approach that Apple, Google, and Microsoft have all supported, and ExpressVPN has already integrated it into its ExpressKeys password manager.
To activate one, log in to your ExpressVPN accountselect your profile in the upper right corner, choose Account and billingand follow the instructions to add password.
If you use ExpressKeys, you can save the password there along with your other logins. And if you prefer to stick with what you know, your password will continue to function as another means of access.
