- Avellone says studio doesn’t have source code
- He adds that they may have had “aspects of the code” but “they didn’t know how to put it back together.”
Obsidian Entertainment co-founder and former chief creative officer Chris Avellone said To fall: New Vegas a remake might not be possible because Bethesda doesn’t have the “engineering know-how”.
In a recent interview with YouTube channel TKs-Mantis, Avellone, who has also written for New Vegassaid he didn’t think the company would be able to create a modern version of the 2010 role-playing game (RPG) like last year’s. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remasteredwhich was co-developed by Bethesda and Virtuos (via GamesRadar).
“Quite simply, I don’t think Bethesda has the engineering know-how to do a New Vegas remaster,” Avellone said, adding that he knows people “enjoyed some of the visuals” of Oblivion Remastered, but overall it seems like the reception was pretty negative.

TKs-Mantis discusses rumors concerning a Fallout 3 remake, suggesting Bethesda use the game’s Gamebryo and Unreal Engine 5 again for visual improvements, such as Oblivion Remasteredand the fans want the same thing for New Vegas.
Avellone explained that “pragmatically, it would make more sense to try this process with Fallout 3 before going to New Vegasjust to see what all the issues and problems that arise from it are,” but there is “a reason” why that would be impossible.
That reason, he claimed, was that studio head Feargus Urquhart did not give Bethesda the game’s source code after development was completed.
Look on it
“The very last step for New Vegas was ‘please provide all the source code and the ability to build the release, and we’ll pay you about $10,000 for this step,'” Avellone said. “Now, what this step actually means is that if all of these assets are given to Bethesda, it means that they can recreate the game at any time. So, for reasons that I don’t know, but I have my suspicions, Feargus decided not to take this step and didn’t stick with it.”
He went on to say: “It’s not a strange decision if you feel, which would not be outside the realm of possibility, that he felt that the New Vegas the experiment cheated him out of X amount of money, in which case cutting off the revenue stream from that product for a period of time would be a possibility. I could certainly see that, and I’m not saying that’s the case. »
When asked if Bethesda had the source code, Avellone said, “They may have aspects of the code, but everyone I spoke to after that time said they had no idea how to put it back together.”
In September 2023, it was reported that Microsoft court documents showed a remastering project. Oversight And Fallout 3. While Oblivion Remastered turned out to be true, Bethesda has yet to announce any new remake plans.
Oblivion Remasteredalthough disclosed in advance, was deleted, so if a Fallout 3 the remaster is in the works, there is always the possibility of this happening again.
For now, the studio is developing Ancient scrolls 6which was announced in 2018. Fallout 5 should also be launched after Ancient scrolls 6.
