Four police officers have disappeared after arresting suspected illegal immigrants near the Pakistan-Iran border.
Armed attackers kidnapped four police officers in the coastal town of Gwadar, located near Pakistan’s maritime border with Iran, police confirmed on Thursday.
The kidnapped persons were identified as Niaz Ahmed, Shoaib, Ehsan and Sajid Ali. According to initial information, the agents had intercepted a vehicle carrying Afghan nationals the day before who were trying to enter Pakistan illegally. The suspects were traveling in a Zambad (a type of vehicle commonly used for smuggling).
Police officials said the officers on duty immediately informed the Kantani station in-charge, ASI Musaddaq Ali, about the situation. The ASI asked them to transport the detained persons to the police station. However, shortly after, all communication with the four police officers was lost.
Authorities believe the officers were taken hostage by armed men. Security forces cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to find the missing personnel. No group has claimed responsibility for the kidnapping so far. Further investigation is underway.
