- APK teardown reveals Gemini for Mac could become an agent assistant
- The tool could control your Mac, just like the superapp planned by Claude Cowork and OpenAI
- Claude still leads the way, with OpenAI silent and Google yet to confirm details
Just weeks after Google launched a dedicated macOS app for Gemini to face competition from OpenAI, the company is also reportedly considering adding even more new agentic capabilities.
A Gemini-powered “computer usage” agent could be in the works to control parts of your Mac, much like Anthropic’s Claude Cowork feature.
Although the company has not yet indicated any such plans, the Android Package Kit (APK) teardown by 9to5Google indicates that Gemini could organize files and perform other actions through the Mac app.

Is Google trying to make the Gemini application more like Claude Cowork?
The app, which is still in its infancy, primarily serves as a chat interface with an Option + Space shortcut for quick access, in the same vein as the ChatGPT app. A window sharing feature also lets Gemini see what’s on the screen for additional context without copying and pasting.
macOS’s Screen Access and Accessibility permissions would likely grant Gemini access to view what’s on the screen, control the mouse and keyboard, and interact with files directly on the machine. 9to5Google also implied that links with Google Workspace apps could cause Gemini to convert unstructured files into Docs, Sheets, and Slides files.
Such an application wouldn’t be such a surprise, with Google having opened its Gemini 2.5 Computer Use model to developers last October and rival companies also experimenting in the same space.
While this would give Gemini a temporary advantage over ChatGPT, which is still a fairly basic app nearly two years after its launch, it might not give Google the upper hand for too long.
OpenAI is reportedly working on a superapp that brings together ChatGPT, Atlas, and Codex powers into a single interface. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser described the proposed superapp as “the core experience where employees get things done,” but no further announcements have been made regarding the progress of this project.
