- Evolved Halo Campaign will also feature original content and new features
- Creative director Max Szlagor said the remake was a “piece-by-piece creation” process.
- The game will be “more accessible” than the original
Evolved Halo Campaign is not just a simple remake of Halo: Combat EvolvedThe campaign, according to Halo Studios, is a mix of original content and new features designed for a modern shooter.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, where we tested the upcoming game, executive producer Damon Conn and creative director Max Szlagor explained how the team recaptured the feel of the original game and the challenges of making it a new experience.
“It’s a combination [..] of this Halo simulation, which we built over 25 years, from [Halo] Reachbut by gathering additional pieces and combining them into this magnificent Unreal [Engine] “, Szlagor said. “As for the challenges, it’s just a matter of looking at them piece by piece as we build the levels, the enemy encounters, the vehicles, the weapons.
“It’s just a lot of stuff that we’ve put together. We have all the original content plus these nine new weapons, the ones that you couldn’t use in the original game, so we’re making sure they fit in well with the energy sword, the fuel rod cannon, piloting the Wraith, [and] vehicle hijacking. Just make it piece by piece. »
Conn explained that the “key” is to “integrate it into a more modern shooter”, meaning “make it more accessible” by reorganizing old features so they are more accessible.
“You can find your way through the levels a little easier now,” the developer added, “whereas in the early 2000s you had to find your way, and it was really trial and error. Now we have much more poignant directions to help you.”
There will also be quality of life features built using Unreal Engine 5, including a sprint button, but players can also play the game “the original way” by turning off the option.
“I like to sprint and use it as a crossing feature,” Conn said. “It doesn’t really change how I’m going to play the game, but it definitely allows me to move around the environment in a way that I’m more accustomed to.”
Evolved Halo Campaign will launch on July 28 on PS5, Xbox Series X, Series S and PC.
