Evolved Halo Campaign Executive producer Damon Conn and creative director Max Szlagor confirmed that the remake’s three new missions were created with the help of Halo book author Troy Denning.
In an interview with TechRadar Gaming at Summer Game Fest 2026, where we tested the upcoming game, the developers explained that the Halo The universe has a lot to explore, but they wanted to explore the relationship between Sergeant Johnson and Master Chief in the Operation: METEORITE missions.
“If you think about it, in the original game, you see Sergeant Johnson as a very important character in those original games, but you don’t really know Sergeant Johnson that well, or his relationship with the Chief,” Conn said. “It really set the stage for us to think creatively about, ‘Hey, let’s talk about a mission they did a year before the events of The Ring,’ and then to really address their relationship and how they fight alongside each other.
“Even beyond that, there’s this whole other universe. You have the Spartans and the ODSTs. You have the Brutes. You have the Prophets. It’s really just us leaning into these other elements of the story that we can tell in more depth, which then allow you to go back and appreciate the campaign more and what’s there.”
Szlagor added that Troy Denning, one of the authors who wrote some of the Halo novels, like Halo: Last Light, Halo: PunishmentAnd Halo: Silent Storm – A Master Chief Storyalso “helped with the story” of the three missions.
“It’s an authentic story,” he said, explaining that series veterans who have been fans for 25 years and play on Xbox or PC will get new information they wanted, allowing them to “put more pieces of the puzzle together,” like the Covenant War.
“It’s really going to be fun for them,” Szlagor added. “But also, if you’re new to the experience, maybe you’re a PlayStation player, you’ve never played before, and this will be something that will be really good to play after you’ve played the main ring story.”
However, the creative director suggests players play the new missions “after playing and experiencing the original.”
“It’s meant to be played that way, because we made it a mid-difficulty experience, it’s a little more advanced. You start, and it’s a little harder than the first mission in Halo” he said.
“But again, you can play it in any order you want. We’re not going to make you choose or anything like that, but we’re just suggesting you play it that way.”
Evolved Halo Campaign arrives July 28 on PS5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC.
