How Princess Diana sparked a 30-year crusade to end homelessness

Future king addresses homelessness in moving speech

Prince William delivered one of his strongest messages in the fight against homelessness as his Homewards initiative marked its third anniversary.

Speaking at a special event in central London on Tuesday, the Prince of Wales said homelessness should no longer be seen as a problem that society simply manages, but as one that can be stopped before it starts.

Reflecting on the project’s progress since its launch in 2023, William said the program is already showing encouraging results in its six pilot sites, where communities are working together to prevent people from losing their homes.

The royal’s commitment to the cause dates back more than three decades and was sparked by his late mother, Princess Diana, who first took him to a homeless shelter when he was just 11 years old.

This experience left a lasting impression and shaped what he described as one of the most important missions of his life.

Speaking to his supporters, William argued that not being protected is the result of failing systems rather than personal failure, calling for earlier intervention and better support to prevent vulnerable people reaching crisis point.

He said the successes recorded so far prove that coordinated action between charities, businesses and local communities can create lasting change.

William also spoke of the many people he met during his years visiting shelters and charities, saying each story reinforced the importance of timely support.

The future king stressed that many lives could have taken a different path if help had arrived sooner, adding that no child should ever have to fear becoming homeless.

Closing his speech, he urged partners and supporters to build on the momentum already created, encouraging them to challenge old ways of thinking to avoid this cycle.
