The 2027 America’s Cup cycle begins in the Gulf of Angels, off the coast of Sardinia, for the first of the preliminary regattas. Although the four-day meeting in Sardinia does not count towards the America’s Cup match itself – which is scheduled for July 2027 – it will offer the clearest indication yet of where each team stands.
And a significant change to the format has raised the stakes even further. For the first time in the modern era, each team is allowed to field two entries: one boat with the crew of their first choice team and another helmed by the stars of their Women’s and Youth teams. Impress in the preliminaries and they might even earn a place at the head table.
While Emirates Team New Zealand, Luna Rossa and GB1 each chose this option, Sardinia arrived too early for Team Australia and America Racing Challenger Team USA, who remain absent from the event altogether. Tudor Team Alinghi and La Roche Posay Racing each field one boat, bringing a fleet of eight.
Olympic gold medalist and 2024 America’s Cup winner Nathan Outteridge leads the Emirates Team New Zealand main team, who are the defending champions.
There will be eight fleet races in total, including up to three on Friday and Saturday. A minimum of two fleet races will take place on Sunday, before a showdown between the top two teams.
