The 2026 Tour de France continues today with stage 19, the first of two successive finishes at the summit of the iconic Alpe d’Huez. Today’s stage is a 127.9km race from Gap that includes 3,500m of elevation gain, starting with the category 2 Col Bayard, a 4.8km climb with an average gradient of 7.2%. The runners benefit from a little respite with a short descent and a brief flat passage, before attacking the category 1 Col du Noyer (7.2 km at 8.5%) which takes them to the summit. However, they will be far from finished, with still 100 km to go, including the Col d’Ornon (category 3) (5.4 km at 6.4%) before facing Alpe d’Huez and its 21 well-known hairpins.
Olympic road and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel closed the gap on four-time TdF winner Tadej Pogacar to four minutes and 32 seconds, but with just three stages remaining it will take an almighty effort to prevent the Slovenian from adding a fifth Yellow Jersey to his tally. This would place him at the level of the legendary quartet Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain, and we would not bet against him surpassing them in the years to come.
