Originally scheduled to take place in the Australian state of Victoria, the 2026 Commonwealth Games are now scheduled to begin in Glasgow, Scotland on July 23, beginning with the Opening Ceremony at the OVO Hydro Indoor Arena.
More than 3,000 athletes from 74 countries will compete for 200 gold medals in 10 sports (16 disciplines, including para sports), such as athletics, swimming, track cycling, netball, basketball, etc.
Compared to the 31 sports featured at Birmingham 2022, Glasgow 2026 will feature just 10 sports, with events such as hockey, diving, rugby sevens and cricket all removed. It’s about dealing with rising costs – the same reason Victoria pulled out as host in the first place.
