Watch live streams of the 2026 NBA Finalsas the Knicks and Spurs face off in a repeat of the 1999 showpiece. San Antonio won that series 4-1 to claim the first of five NBA championships (1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2014). It’s been so long since two-time champion New York went all the way (1970, 1973) that they never got their hands on the Larry O’Brien Trophy. Look at old photos and you’ll see its predecessor, used until 1976, the Walter A Brown Trophy.
The Spurs took a grueling route to the NBA Finals, playing 18 games, including a seven-game series against defending champion Oklahoma that didn’t end until Saturday, three days before the opener. In contrast, the Knicks will enter the series on nine days of rest, having played just 14 times in the postseason. They swept Cleveland and Philadelphia.
And yet, Spurs have clearly become the favorites. A lot of that has to do with Victor Wembanyama, the NBA’s unanimous Defensive Player of the Year – who is also San Antonio’s primary offensive threat. The fact that their own big man, Mitchell Robinson, is suffering from a broken finger certainly doesn’t help New York’s cause. Not only was he reportedly in service at Wemby, but he is also one of the best rebounders in the NBA.
It’s worth remembering, however, that these teams met in the NBA Cup Finals in December, with the Knicks winning 124-113. They also destroyed the Spurs to the tune of 114-89 when they faced each other at Madison Square Garden in March. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns dazzled twice. San Antonio won 134-132 in their matchup at Frost Bank Center in December.
One of the main reasons the Knicks have performed so well against the Spurs this season is because they are well equipped to take on Wembanyama. While dominating the paint has been a hallmark of New York’s offense, that’s not an option with the 7-foot-4 dominating the basket. So it’s a good thing they were the most prolific 3-point shooters in the NBA Playoffs.
